Some desserts aren’t just about sweetness — they’re about the love that goes into every bite.
To me, Grandma’s apple pie has always been that sweet.
I still remember cool autumn afternoons in Grandma’s kitchen. The aroma of cinnamon and baked apples filled the air while golden leaves danced outside the window. Grandma always said, “The secret to a perfect pie isn’t butter — it’s patience.”
She would slowly roll out the dough, humming an old tune, and when she wasn’t looking, I would sneak in apple slices. When the pie finally went into the oven, the whole house smelled like peace.
When she brought it out — hot, golden, and bubbly — everyone gathered without being called. Grandpa would take the first bite, steam rising like a comforting memory. And Grandma would smile quietly, watching everyone take that first bite.
Ingredients (serves 6-8)
Apples - 5 medium (peeled and chopped)
Sugar - ¾ cup
Butter - ½ cup (chilled)
All-purpose flour - 2 cups
Cinnamon - 1 teaspoon
Nutmeg - ¼ teaspoon
Lemon juice - 1 tablespoon
Salt - a pinch
Eggs - 1 (for brushing the crust)
Directions
1. Mix the flour, salt, and butter until crumbly. Add a little cold water to make a dough.
2. Divide it into two parts — one for the base, one for the top.
3. Toss the apple slices with the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice.
4. Place the apple mixture on the crust, cover with the top layer, and seal the edges.
5. Brush with beaten egg and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 45-50 minutes until golden brown.
When that first slice was served, I realized -
Grandma's apple pie wasn't just a dessert; it was a taste of home, love, and all the cozy fall weather we shared.
